Calculating Turf
How Do I Calculate How Much Turf I Need?
How To Measure a Square Or Rectangular Lawn
For square or rectangular lawns, simply measure the length and width in meters and multiply the two numbers together to calculate the area.
Alternatively, you can input thelength and width into our turf calculator above.
Our turf calculator will do this for you and tell you how many 1 SQ meter rolls you'll need to order to cover the area.
How To Measure a Circular Lawn
If you have a circular lawn, you'll need to determine the radius, which is the straight line from the center of the circle to the outside.
Multiply this number by pi (3.142) to calculate the area of the lawn
How To Measure a Irregular Lawn
For irregular lawns, it's best to divide the area into smaller squares and circles, using the aforementioned methods to calculate each area and then add them together to obtain the overall area.
It's also advisable to order 5% more turf than required to account for any discrepancies that may arise.

How to Lay Turf
1. Preparing the Ground
To ensure a healthy turf, prepare the soil by following these steps:
a. Remove Debris, Weeds, and Rocks: Start by clearing the area of any debris, weeds, or rocks. This will create a clean canvas for your new turf to grow.
b. Level the Ground: Use a shovel or garden rake to level the ground. This ensures an even surface and minimizes the risk of bumps or uneven patches in your turf.
c. Add Compost: Mixing organic compost into the soil can improve its quality and provide essential nutrients for your turf. Work the compost into the top few inches of the soil for the best results.
2. Laying the Turf Rolls
Now it’s time to lay down your turf rolls. Follow these steps for a smooth installation:
a. Staggered Pattern: Begin by laying the first row of turf rolls along a straight edge of your lawn. Ensure that the rolls are laid in a staggered pattern, much like brickwork, to avoid visible seams. This creates a more natural and cohesive appearance.
b. Press Firmly: Press the turf rolls firmly into the soil to eliminate air pockets and ensure good soil-to-turf contact. This helps with root establishment.
c. Water Thoroughly: After laying each section, water it thoroughly to settle the turf and help it adhere to the soil. It’s important to keep the turf consistently moist during the first few weeks.
3. Watering and Maintenance
To keep your newly laid turf looking its best, you’ll need to follow a maintenance routine:
a. Regular Watering: Water your turf consistently, especially during the first few weeks. Water in the morning to allow the grass to dry before nightfall, reducing the risk of diseases.
b. Mowing: Maintain the right mowing height based on the type of turf you’ve chosen. Ensure the mower blades are sharp to create clean cuts and avoid tearing the grass.
c. Aeration: Periodic aeration helps prevent soil compaction, ensuring that air, water, and nutrients can reach the roots effectively.
d. Fertilisation: Follow a fertilization schedule that suits your turf type to keep it healthy and green. Different varieties may require different nutrients and application frequencies.
e. Pest and Disease Control: Monitor your turf for signs of pests and diseases. Early detection and treatment are essential to maintain its health and vitality.
Common Turf Issues and How to Solve Them
1. Weeds
Weeds can infiltrate your turf, competing for space, water, and nutrients. To tackle this issue:
- Regularly inspect your lawn for weeds.
- Hand pull or use a weeder to remove them individually.
- Apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weed seeds from germinating.
- Consider post-emergent herbicides for established weed control.
2. Pests
Pests like grubs, chinch bugs, and armyworms can damage your turf. To prevent and address pest issues:
- Monitor your lawn for signs of pest damage, such as brown patches or irregular growth.
- Use appropriate pesticides, following recommended guidelines.
- Encourage natural predators like birds to help control pest populations.
3. Fungus and Diseases
Turf can fall victim to fungal diseases, causing discoloration, thinning, and overall poor health. To combat fungal issues:
- Promote good air circulation by proper mowing and aeration.
- Avoid overwatering, as soggy conditions create a favorable environment for fungi.
- Apply fungicides when necessary, following manufacturer instructions.
4. Bare Patches and Thinning
If you notice areas of your turf with thin or bare spots, consider the following remedies:
- Reseed or patch bare areas with the same turf variety to restore full coverage.
- Improve soil quality in thinning areas with aeration and topdressing.
- Regularly fertilize to encourage healthy, thick growth and fill in bare patches.
5. Discoloration and Yellowing
Yellowing or discoloration can result from nutrient deficiencies or pH imbalances. To address this:
- Test your soil to determine nutrient and pH levels.
- Adjust pH levels if needed by adding lime or sulfur.
- Apply the appropriate fertilizer to correct nutrient deficiencies.
Turf Care & Maintenance
Looking After Your Lawn
- Regular Mowing: Keep your turf at the right height for its type, ensuring not to cut more than one-third of its length at a time.
- Watering: Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth, and water in the morning to reduce the risk of diseases.
- Fertilization: Apply fertilizers in accordance with your turf variety and local conditions, ensuring it receives the necessary nutrients.
- Weed Control: Keep an eye out for weeds and address them promptly to prevent them from taking over your lawn.
- Aeration: Periodically aerate the soil to improve water and nutrient penetration.
Seasonal Turf Care
Spring Lawn Care
Spring is a time of rejuvenation for your turf. Here’s what you can do to kickstart a healthy growing season:
-
- De-thatching: Remove any accumulated thatch to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots.
- Overseeding: Fill in bare spots and promote a thicker lawn by overseeding in the spring.
- Weed Control: Apply pre-emergent herbicides to prevent weeds from taking root.
- Fertilisation: Provide your lawn with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage growth.
Autumn Lawn Care
Autumn brings its own set of lawn care priorities. Here’s what you should focus on during this season:
- Raking and Leaf Removal: Clear leaves and debris from your lawn regularly to prevent suffocation and fungal issues.
- Aeration: Fall is an excellent time for core aeration to improve soil health and promote root growth.
- Overseeding: Reinvigorate your lawn by overseeding to repair any summer damage.
- Fertilisation: Apply a balanced fertilizer to help the grass store nutrients for the winter months.
Summer Lawn Care
As the weather warms up, your turf may face some challenges. Here’s how to maintain its health during the summer:
- Proper Watering: In the summer, lawns often need more frequent watering. However, water deeply and early in the morning to prevent drought stress and diseases.
- Mowing Height: Adjust your mower to a higher setting to provide shade for the soil and reduce water evaporation.
- Pest and Disease Management: Keep an eye out for pests and diseases and treat them promptly if detected.
- Adequate Fertilization: Limit fertilization during hot summer months to avoid stressing the grass.
Winter Lawn Care
Winter can be tough on your lawn, but with the right care, you can keep it healthy and resilient:
- Mowing: Trim your lawn to an ideal height before winter, but avoid cutting it too short to protect roots from the cold.
- Fertilisation: Apply a winter-specific fertilizer with lower nitrogen but higher phosphorus and potassium for root strength.
- Weed Control: Use a pre-emergent herbicide in late fall to prevent winter weeds.
- Overseeding: Strengthen your lawn by overseeding thin areas, especially for cool-season grasses.
- Cold Protection: Use mulch or lawn blankets to insulate roots against extreme temperatures.
- Snow & Ice Management: Gently clear snow and avoid excessive de-icing salts to prevent lawn damage.
